Choosing a WordPress Theme
Over the past few weeks, we’ve covered the essentials for building your own WordPress site (domain, hosting, mapping out content, etc.).
Now that you’ve got hosting set up and your content mapped out, it’s time for the fun part: deciding how your site will look. That’s where themes come in.
🎨 What’s a Theme?
A WordPress theme is the design layer of your site. It controls layout, colors, fonts, and how your content is presented. Think of it as the paint, furniture, and decor inside your house – the structure is already there, but the theme makes it feel like your space.
🧭 How to Choose the Right Theme
When picking a theme, ask yourself:
- Does it fit your content? A portfolio theme should highlight visuals. A blog theme should make text easy to read.
- Is it responsive? Your site must look good on phones, tablets, and desktops.
- Is it lightweight? Bloated themes slow down your site. Speed matters for visitors and search engines.
- Is it supported? Look for themes that are updated regularly and have solid documentation.
- Does it play well with plugins? Plugins are the tools that add functionality. For example, WooCommerce (or similar) is needed if you want an online shop that processes orders. A good theme should integrate smoothly with the plugins you’ll rely on.
🛠 Free vs. Premium
- Free themes (from WordPress.org) are great for starting out. They’re simple, safe, and cost nothing.
- Premium themes (from marketplaces or developers) often include more customization, support, and polish. They’re worth it if you want a unique look or advanced features – but keep in mind you’ll likely pay them annually to keep using that theme.
🧪 Trying Out Themes
At SOHO Admin Force, we usually recommend starting with a few of the free themes to see what feels right. It’s a low‑risk way to experiment with different looks before committing to a premium option.
- If you’re doing it yourself: WordPress.org has clear instructions on how to install and customize themes. This blog isn’t a step‑by‑step tutorial — it’s here to educate you on what WordPress is and its core parts — but the WordPress site itself will walk you through the process.
- If you’re working with us: Simply send us links to the themes you’d like to try out, and we’ll take it from there. We’ll install them, configure them, and help you compare options so you can make the best choice without the hassle.
🧩 Keep It Maintainable
Whatever theme you choose, the most important factor is whether you can keep it running smoothly. A site that’s too complicated quickly becomes a chore, and a site that’s neglected can turn into a liability.
At SOHO Admin Force, our focus with WordPress is on helping clients have sites that look great and stay manageable. We’ll guide you toward themes that are clean, flexible, and easy to update – avoiding those bloated, feature‑stuffed options that seem impressive at first but become headaches later.
Our philosophy is simple:
- Start with the essentials. Don’t overbuild before you’re ready.
- Add complexity only when it’s truly needed. WordPress gives you room to grow, but growth should be intentional.
- Keep maintenance realistic. Whether you’re managing the site yourself or having us handle it, the goal is a site that works for you, not against you.

If you’re unsure about theme choices or worried about long‑term upkeep, we’ll take that burden off your shoulders and make sure your site stays healthy and effective.
As always, if you have questions about choosing a WordPress theme – or any of the steps we’ve covered in this WP 101 series – I’d love to hear from you. Feel free to reply here or contact me directly, and I’ll be glad to help you figure out the best path forward for your site.
Happy December,
– Jeff
